LED can GROW your Business

A restaurant in Sweden, called Upper House, has just won a Business Restaurant of the Year Award from a business journal in Sweden, something that i’m sure has filled their reservation book.

A big part of this accolade comes from the restaurants head chef making a decision to grow essential herbs and vegetables IN the restaurant and put them on display.

How do they grow in a restaurant? State of the art LED lighting with a tuned spectrum to promote, and even accelerate plant growth. Throughout the restaurant they have small indoor gardens that use these specially tuned LED Grow lights to produce annise, cumin, chervil, fennel, and beetroot.

For plant growth, the first stage of photosynthesis is the absorption of light by chlorophyll. Chlorophyll A&B and Carotene are three major elements to affect plant growth. The two ideal wavelengths for photosynthesis are Blue Ray 400-500nm and Red Ray 600-700nm.

Our LED Grow Lights are manufactured by one of the highest quality LED companies in the world and use CREE or Philips LUXEON chips.

Good for the Environment, Good for the Economy. Good for Social awareness. Triple bottom line investment for Australian business owners.

Entertainment LED World gets much Brighter

Osram new Entertainment LED

Osram, whom are the world’s second largest manufacturer of optoelectronic semiconductors based in Germany, have developed a very cool new LED chip that is aimed at the Entertainment stages of the world.

Their original Ostar Stage LED product has been vastly surpassed with this new chip in terms of brightness, longevity, and size. At only 30% larger, it can produce 260% the brightness. It does so by using a breakthrough in their manufacturing process and the processing of the thin-film layers.

This chip has 4 chips within it with Red, Green, Blue, and White (1.4mm x 1.4mm). They are built to be used in high power stage lights which will give a much more stable, cooler, and digital lighting option for entertainment venues.

This should prove to be a big jump for this type of entertainment and stage LED lighting with other manufacturers likely to follow suit, and Osram to continue to improve upon their already excellent innovation.

LED Stadium Lighting is here

Chelsea Football Club has pioneered the next big jump in high power, high lumen output, and highly technical LED Lighting by becoming the first premiere league stadium to make the switch. Stamford Bridge, a world class football stadium home to the Barclays Premier League leading Chelsea FC, has equipped itself with not only an energy efficient lighting system, but a technologically superior LED lighting system as well.

Designed to give the players, the fans and television broadcasters the greatest experience available including HD super slow-mo, no flicker, and instant on/off with zero warm-up.

The best thing about LED is that it is digital. It can be coupled with a lighting control system that allows amazing ability to adjust light levels of individual lights to give optimal levels. It can also be integrated with DMX software so that the lighting can be used for more advanced requirements like concerts and stage lighting. This way the football club can pre-program lighting shows both before and after the game to build the audience up and get the fans pumped.

Australia and local councils are still very shy towards LED stadium lighting just due to the lack of case studies. But LED is LED. The product is refined and proven. A good chip, powerful driver, and well designed heatsink is all that is required on any scale. Future Sustainability is currently working with a Queensland Rugby Club to perhaps pioneer LED Stadium lighting in Australia. Our stadium light holds all the characteristics of a top quality LED light including DMX software control. Stay tuned.

LED on the Rise

2014 was a big year for LED sales, production and technology increases. 2015 is due to be even BIGGER.

The 2015 Lighting Industry is set to hit $82.1Bln USD, with LED accounting for $25.7Bln (31%).

The largest market for LED still is Europe, as they are typically global technology pioneers. 23% of the LED market size will be in Europe even thought they have no huge incentives or subsidies. It is due to their high energy prices and willingness to adopt new technologies.

China is close behind with a 21% share of the LED market, but mostly due to the fact that they are the main manufacturer of LED products and there is a domestic cost advantage for supply and market penetration.

Prices will likely continue to become more competitive as demand rises, and manufacturers will be facing a similar situation to solar a few years ago. Those with the best management will be left standing, and those fly by nighters with poor product and service will fall off.

The market of LED in Australia is really becoming more popular. Brisbane LED markets, Gold Coast LED markets, and Sunshine Coast LED markets are all heating up with the technology now passing through the early adopter stage.

Grid Feed-In Limiting Device seminar

With the recent influx of Commercial Solar interest in the Brisbane Solar and Queensland Solar markets, the obvious issue with our Utility companies is the potential for large scale solar power being fed into their electricity grids.

Where is the problem? Shouldn’t and Wouldn’t they want Free Power? Unfortunately solar power being fed into the grid in certain areas can wreak havoc on power line parameters. Until Energex and Ergon upgrade their infrastructure to be able to handle commercial size solar feed-in, we must limit and block this excess solar being produced (over and above what is being used by the loads of the premises).

Enter the Grid Feed-In Limiting Device (GFLD) and Zero Export Device.

There have been many generations of GFLD’s and the industry has been playing a bit of catch up with requirements.

The Australian Solar Council is hosting a Zero Export and External Grid Protection seminar in Brisbane on Tuesday the 9th of December at the National College of Brisbane. Jeremy Tranter (RPEQ) is an Electrical Engineer that has experience with approval process and specific certification requirements of these types of Inverter Energy Systems.

LED Street Lights Raise Ethical Flag

LED Street Lights on a Highway
LED Street Lights on a Highway

LED Street Lights are a no-brainer. They consumer 50-60% less energy than traditional street lights, they turn on instantly (no warm up), they have a much clearer white colour making them safer, and they last 2-3 times longer which reduces maintenance and replacement costs. All those benefits add up to likely a 75% per annum savings.

Current street lighting costs Australian local councils (ergo tax payers) in excess of $400Mln AUD per year and contributes to roughly 1.4Mln tonnes of CO2 emissions in the same period.

So why aren’t our local councils making the switch to LED? Is it not proven? Nope. Does it not make financial sense? Nope. Do they have better things to do? Nope.

The answer is, they actually don’t own the street lights. 90% of Australian street lights are owned and maintained by Utility companies. This is a big money maker for those utility companies, so why would they want to replace a high revenue generating asset with one that makes half as much money and they don’t have to fix every other year. Truth is your local councils would love to have LED Street Lighting, but unfortunately that doesn’t fit the agenda of the utility companies. Ethical, Environmental, and Social reasoning don’t fit into their business plan.

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) released a practice note about this very subject, where they have urged state governments to change their regulations with regards to street lights or have ownership transferred to local councils.

“Councils, governments and regulators will need to reconsider the future form of ownership, financing and management of street lighting,” the IPWEA practice note regarded.

Surely public safety, environmental safety, and reduction in tax payer contributions should be enough for Australians to rally behind this blatant unethical capitalization.

Huge LED Screen an Investment?

In mid November last month, the largest LED Screen in the world was commissioned in New York City. The amazing display stretches 1 city block and is about 8 stories high. It is equipped with the latest technology for Television broadcast and live camera shooting. It consists of 24 million RGB pixels and has a resolution that bests even the latest in TV technology.

The New York Times has reported that this Giant Advertisement will rent out of $2.5Mln USD for a 4 week stretch. That is $32.5Mln USD (38.2Mln AUD) per year. There are rumours that Google has leased it out for the rest of 2014.

This may just be a budding investment opportunity for the Brisbane LED industry!

Brisbane and Gold Coast LED Rebate

Positive Payback Business

Energex has a Positive Payback scheme for specific suburbs of Brisbane and the Gold Coast to replace your old lighting with LED. Brisbane businesses and Gold Coast businesses that are looking for ways to cut down on their electricity bills can do so very effectively with an LED lighting retrofit. LED instantly reduces your lighting energy consumption by up to 85%, which then also reduces your peak demand. The Energex Positive Payback lighting incentive is in place to reduce peak demand. It is cheaper, easier, and better for the environment for them to subsidize businesses to reduce their peak demand, then to add further power production to meet demand. An LED retrofit is already a very fast payback investment for most businesses, and this subsidy makes it even more attractive.

Future Sustainability offers the best value Brisbane LED and Gold Coast LED solutions on the market. Our research into LED components and structure allow us to customize the top LED brands with our manufacturing partners. Backed with an industry leading LED warranty of up to 5 years, that is insured and protected, gives our customers piece of mind when choosing Future to retrofit the lights in the business.
